@eyeslasho Smart for humans, at least. We will all be dumber than a house cat compared to AI, if that’s any consolation. With assortative mating and caesarean sections allowing larger head size, there has been a massive rise in exceptionally smart people in the last half century or so.

@pmarca It’s just what resonates with our limbic system. Evolutionarily, news about danger was far more important than good news, as the former could result in your death. Those who did not respond to danger did not procreate – only the paranoid survived. In modern times, the danger…

@ID_AA_Carmack The right way to grade any technology is not comparing it to competitors (too easy), but comparing it to the limit of physics. That is, for example, how we grade Starlink latency, which shows that there is still a *lot* of room for improvement! Same for $/ton to Mars.

@eerac @paulg There are two modern examples (Germany and Korea) where people were in essentially the same starting position, but the country got split along an arbitrary line. One side went full government (communism), the other side went about half government. A few decades later, the…

@eerac @paulg Once you move beyond the level of what can be personally consumed, it is now about capital allocation efficiency. The government is about an order of magnitude worse than the private sector.

@paulg The fundamental error of socialism, which smart people still fall for, is shifting capital allocation from highly effective entrepreneurs to astonishingly ineffective government. This dramatically reduces total goods & services output, which determines our standard of living.
