@junshiguancha They have added aspects of Starship, such as use of stainless steel and methalox, to a Falcon 9 architecture, which would enable it to beat Falcon 9. But Starship in another league.

@Benioff Starship should be able to deliver around 300 GW per year of solar-powered AI satellites to orbit, maybe 500 GW. The “per year” part is what makes this such a big deal. Average US electricity consumption is around 500 GW, so at 300 GW/year, AI in space would exceed the entire US

@TJ_Cooney That said, most Starship spaceports will probably need to be ~20 miles / 30km offshore for acceptable noise levels, especially for frequent daily flights, as would occur for point to point flights on Earth

@flcnhvy @Erdayastronaut @ValkyrieBaron11 @NASASpaceflight Starship + Super Heavy propellant mass is 4800 tons (78% O2 & 22% CH4). I think we can get propellant cost down to ~$100/ton in volume, so ~$500k/flight. With high flight rate, probably below $1.5M fully burdened cost for 150 tons to orbit or ~$10/kg.

@Erdayastronaut @dwesterster Trying have fewer parts, so strakes are unlikely. Some very counterintuitive CFD results in both hypersonic & subsonic regimes. Starship does controlled falling more than flying.

@Teslarati ~1750K is peak heating expected on about 20% of Starship for LEO entry, ~1600K on 20%. Rest drops below 1450K, so no heat shield needed. Radiative cooling at T^4 takes care of 60% of the ship. Another reason for steel.
